YOUTH PROGRAMS: Spring 2017
Employment Drop In Center: Office Hours Monday-Friday (10am-4pm) Looking for work after school or during the summer? Our Employment Drop-In Center will help provide support on resume design and creation, employment referrals, and interview preparation.
Puma Success Team: Meets Thursdays (during 6th period) A weekly leadership class designed to encourage and refine leadership skills within students.
Teen Center: Open Monday-Friday (3:35pm-6:00pm) Hang out with friends at Burton in the Teen Center (2nd Floor). Play video games, fuse-ball, shoot pool, listen to music or just lounge around on our brand new furniture! Snack available to all everyday.
Board Game Club: Meets Fridays (3:30pm-5:00pm) Hang out with friends and play your favorite board games!
Puma Scratch DJ: Meets Tuesdays (3:30pm-5:00pm) Learn to mix songs and drop beats. Use state of the art equipment to make your music. Learn from Beacon's own professional DJ!
Comic Book Workshop: Meets Tuesdays & Thursdays (3:30pm-5:00pm) Love to draw? Love comic books? Want to learn how to make your own? Comic Book Workshop focuses on developing artistic, story boarding & telling, drawing, and graphic skills.
ScriptEd: Meets Tuesdays & Thursdays (3:30pm-5:00pm) Want to learn how to make your own websites and games? ScriptEd is a semester long after school program where you will learn how to code from experts working in tech. Work with awesome software developers, field trips to tech companies like Google, snacks, participate in hackathons, create awesome projects, compete for prizes, and much more!
Smash Club: Meets Monday-Friday (3:35pm-6:00pm) Love to play Super Smash Bros? So do we! Come to the Burton Teen Center and play Super Smash on our Wii U console. Smash Club holds and participates in annual tournaments with high schools from all over the Bay Area!
Beacon Leadership Team: Meets Fridays (@ Lunch) BLT promotes increasing school engagement and leadership building skills through planning Beacon at Burton and city-wide Beacon events.
Puma Prevent: Meets Fridays (@ Lunch) Want to work to end sexual violence? Puma Prevent is dedicated to spreading awareness of sexual violence to high school and college campuses through tabling events.
Puma Street Team: Meets Friday (3:35pm-5pm) Acquire leadership and outreaching skills by joining Puma Street Team. Help the Teen Center Staff outreach for programs events by designing posters and marketing materials and engage in bi-weekly leadership workshops.
Youth & Government: Meets Thursdays (@ Lunch) California YMCA Y&G's goal is to promote leadership skills and engage youth at state conferences with thousands of other Y &G participants to discuss political issues and current policies.
Computer Lab: Open Monday-Friday (3:35pm-6:00pm) Need a quiet space to do homework? Use Beacon's Computer Lab open daily. Utilize the Mac and PC desktop computers and take advantage of the computer programs and internet connection. Printers available to all.
Puma Academy: Meets Mondays & Wednesdays (3:35pm-4:35pm) Want help balancing school and sports? Student-Athletes are welcome to join Puma Academy, an 8th period credited class and study hall designed to support athletes in performing well on the field and in the classroom.
Tutoring/Academic Support: Times Vary Need support with a subject, Beacon offers teacher lead tutoring groups to help you access the extra time and support for a subject.
Recreation & Wellness Programs
Cheer Club: Meets Tuesday-Friday (3:35pm-6:00pm) Do you have school spirit? Competitive Cheer team performs throughout the year at Burton sporting events and participates in annual competitions and performances.
Train Hard, Play Later: Meets Wednesday (12:40pm-3:00pm) Get fit and training at this open gym. 5 on 5 basketball games, weight training, and exercise training available to all. Get in shape and season ready!
Drum Corps: Meets Monday-Friday(3:45pm-6:00pm) Join this musical marching ensemble consisting of percussion and brass instruments, and color guard. Drum Corps practices every day and performs in local competitions, school events, and parades.
Cultural & Community Based Programs
Black Student Union: Meets Mondays (@ Lunch) Open to all, this group empowers members of the African American community by providing a place to come together and discuss community issues. Students gain an understanding of their heritage, culture, and origins.
La Raza: Meets Thursdays (@ Lunch) Open to all, this group engages in real life and community issues while gaining a better understanding of their heritage, community, and origins.
T.P.O.T: Meets Wednesdays (12:30pm-2:30pm) Open to all (Polynesian and all others), T.P.O.T is a safe space to organize and build community and talk critically about and address issues influences our communities.

Tai Chi: Meets Saturday (9:30am-11:00am) Looking for a low-impact workout, join Tai Chi and engage in a Chinese form of physical exercise characterized by a series of very slow and deliberate balletic body movements.
Know Your Rights Workshops: Dates and Times Vary Want to know more about immigration laws, civil rights, tenant rights, public housing, interactions with police, financial literacy, bankruptcy, and small claims court?
